How you can help
St Cross is one of England's oldest charitable institutions. It is still continuing to fulfil the wishes of its original founder, Bishop De Blois, and has done this - through good times and poor - for more than eight centuries. Demands on the Hospital of St Cross are possibly greater now than in any time in its history:
The Trustees are deeply conscious of their duty to maintain the fabric of this beautiful complex of buildings, not only for our generation, but also for all those who will benefit in the future.
The Hospital is a totally private foundation, with no revenue funding from the Government and no support from bodies such as English Heritage. The Trustees are grateful to Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council for occasional historic building grants - which give a limited proportion toward repair and expenditure. Otherwise the Charity relies totally on income received from day to day to meet the massive bills to conserve its buildings, comply with current health and safety regulations, and fulfil its obligations to the Brothers of St Cross and yet still maintain some capital reserves for the future.
This has become an increasingly difficult task.
Your help is vital. There are a few ways in which you can help:
a) Visit St Cross
Come and visit the Hospital of St Cross. While you are here, visit the Porter's Lodge shop and buy a few souvenirs, or have a drink and something to eat in the tea rooms. All income from sales of tickets, souvenirs and refreshments goes towards the upkeep of the ancient buildings and supporting the Brothers who live there.
b) Make a simple donation
Anyone can make a donation towards the running of St Cross, by sending a crossed cheque or postal order, or by putting money into one of the donation boxes around the Hospital itself. All donations are used to help maintain the wonderful buildings or for the continued welfare of the Brothers. If you want the money to be used for something specific, please remember to say so in a covering letter. Please make any cheques payable to The Hospital of St Cross. For donations over £100, you may prefer to use Gift Aid so that the Hospital can reclaim the tax. In this case, please download the Gift Aid form and return it to the Hospital with your donation. c) Leave a legacy to St Cross in your will
If you have already made a Will, you will need to keep it up to date as you get older and a new Will can be made at any time. More simply, you can add charitable legacies to your Will by seeing your solicitor about a short codicil.
Home-made Wills can be tricky - it's all too easy to make a mistake which leads to problems. It's far better to make your will properly with the help of a solicitor. This will ensure that it really does reflect your wishes.
If you decide to leave a legacy to St Cross, our complete name/address is: The Hospital of St Cross & Almshouse of Noble Poverty, St Cross, Winchester, SO23 9SD.
